Playing Tennis for Fun and Fitness

One of my favorite individual sports to play is the game of tennis. There are so many things to like about tennis, it’s hard to list them all here. Tennis is a fun-filled game that combines the intensity of running around the court with the finesse of using your racquet to hit the ball perfectly and placing it where your opponent can’t reach it. The competitive nature of tennis makes for some high drama and the continual movement around the court burns tons of calories and keeps you in great physical shape while having fun.

Learning to play tennis is very easy. In fact, many kids start learning the game when they are only 4 or 5 years old. All you need to do is learn how to handle a racquet and be able to hit the ball with the racquet in a way that will place it in bounds on your opponent’s side of the net. Another thing you need to learn is how to serve. This is a bit more difficult, because you need to hit the ball from behind the back line and into the square box on your opponent’s side that is perpendicular to where you are serving.

While tennis is easy to learn, it is difficult to master. It is not hard to learn the rules to this game and it is not hard to learn where you are supposed to serve the ball and/or hit the ball, but it is hard to master these skills. Some learn quicker than others, but part of the fun in this game is that if you play it regularly, you are continually improving with these skills.

Unlike some games like football, playing tennis does not end for most people when you finish high school or college. Even if you are not a pro level player, you can still have fun and stay in shape playing tennis for the rest of your life.
