British Columbia Healthcare Industry
Public Sector
The Ministry of Health, Regional Health Boards and Community Health Councils together make up the governing
structure of the public healthcare system in British Columbia, under the Health Authorities Act. The roles and responsibilities
of each body are distinct, but complementary. The Minister of Health retains ultimate authority under the Health Authorities
Act for the health care system in British Columbia, and ensures that Regional Health Boards and Community Health
Councils meet certain requirements to ensure a standard quality of care. The roles and responsibilities of Regional Health Boards
and Community Health Councils will vary from region to region, according to the range and location of services, but generally
they set the direction for health care in a specific region of the province.
