Provincial Health Authorities
The system of health service delivery in British Columbia has undergone fundamental and considerable change in the
past five years, and a new structure was proposed to increase community involvement in the delivery of health care and to
encourage a closer working relationship between healthcare institutions and the communities. A regional governance structure
was established, with Regional boards or authorities being responsible for delivering services across the continuum of care for
specific geographic regions.
On April 1, 1997 the Ministry of Health officially transferred authority to eleven regional health boards, thirty-four
community health councils and seven community health services societies.
