The Medical Devices sector consists of privately owned companies involved in the manufacture and distribution of medical
devices, equipment and supplies. A medical device is any instrument or apparatus used to treat or diagnose illness and injury.
A wide range of products are available including assistive, diagnostic and dental devices; physiotherapy and sports medicine
equipment; medical equipment and supplies, home care supplies as well as ambulance and emergency vehicles & equipment.
The industry is strictly regulated under the federal Therapeutic Products Programme to ensure the safety and effectiveness of
medical devices. New regulations have been introduced that classify medical devices into four categories, depending on the level
of potential risk to the patient. Under the new regulations, medical devices will undergo strict scrutiny based on their risk
classification in order to be placed on the market.
